To reduce the water level, the Iller was widened in the section Burgberg.
Following 1999 floods, the Obere Iller was widened, restored and a new retention area was created.
To improve flood protection and the habitat quality for flora and fauna and to prevent depth erosion in the Lech the project LIFE Lech II, consisting of 11 measures, was brought to life. The water authority Kempten is project partner and project sponsor of the measure C11 close to Füssen. 8 groynes were built to reactivite the relocation of the Lech and to develop a branched wild river landscape. The groynes are constructed according to the "Instream River Training" principle.
Following 1999 floods, the flood protection at the Iller was improved. The Iller was widened and a new retention area and a 250 m long groyne was created.
Strong drainage, intensification of use and abandonment of use have severely degenerated the Felmer Moos. The BUND Naturschutz was able to acquire 12.5 hectares in the Felmer Moos and has renaturalized it according to the requirements of climate and species protection.
The Genhofer Moor is an important high and low moor complex that extends across the district of Oberallgäu. Many years ago, the BUND Naturschutz (BN) bought a piece of land there. Since then, the free areas have been regularly mowed. In the winter of 2012, the BN, under the concept of area supervisor Isolde Miller and in consultation with the Allgäuer Moorallianz and the Lower Nature Conservation Authority increased the free area by deforestation and closed small drainage ditches to keep the water in the area.
The BUND Naturschutz owns some litter meadows in the Wettismoos and maintains them according to the guidelines of nature conservation. The meadows are partly mowed by hand. In order to preserve the biodiversity the mowing takes place after the first of September. The mowed material is used as litter by local farmers.
The Tuffenmoos is a mountain pine bog with an open raised bog core. The eastern part of the bog is undisturbed, the western part has been peat-covered between 1 and 2 m deep. Two deep ditches ran in this peat-covered bog area, which drained the remaining peat body, promoted further peat decomposition and prevented the reintroduction of the typical raised bog inhabitants. To counteract these negative effects, the landscape conservation association carried out numerous restoration measures in 2010 with funding from the climate program.
Following the flood events 1999, 2002 and 2005 the water authority Kempten improved the flood protecion at Oberthalhofen. One part was a 1000 m² big retention area with near natural design.
The Isar floodplains have changed since the beginning of the 20th century. Especially the construction of the Walchensee power plant at the beginning of the 1920s, the simultaneous longitudinal shoring of the river banks as well as the construction of the Sylvenstein reservoir at the end of the 1950s had a negative impact on the development of the habitats, which are characterized by dynamics, flooding and bedload transport.
