Nature-based solutions to facilitate forest's adaptation to climate change.The objectives with future climate change in the Ariege Pyrenees Ariegeoises are to maintain the services provided by the forest, whether in terms of economic services (wood production and associated jobs), socio-cultural (wood production and associated jobs), socio-cultural services (landscapes, recreational uses, tourism) or regulation ervices (soil maintenance in mountains, carbon absorption and storage, preservation storage, preservation of water quality). The actions will be : - to identify and test nature-based
The aim is to restore the site and enhance its value, in particular through the reappropriation of the peat bog by the local inhabitants. The Pédestarrès peat bog is a site of high value for the conservation of biodiversity: one of the rare domed peat bogs in the Pyrenees characterised by habitats of priority interest, threatened species and a major functional role. It is also a site of exceptional scientific interest in terms of palynology, which has made it possible to trace the history of the vegetation of the Pyrenees over the last 27,000 years.
"Natural conditions that explain the triggering of snow avalanches are becoming better-known, but our understanding of how socio-environmental changes can influence the occurrence of damaging avalanches is still limited.This study analyses the evolution of snow avalanche damage in the Asturian Massif (NW Spain) between 1800 and 2015, paying special attention to changes in land-use and land-cover patterns. A damage index has been performed using historical sources, photointerpretation and fieldwork-based data, which were introduced in a GIS and processed by means of statistical analysis.
The Bilbao Greenbelt project aims to expand and connect the city's green areas. It has already led to 1 million extra square metres of green areas in Bilbao in the last 10 years. The project aims to create a network linking the peripheral green belt with urban parks and other green areas inside the city. It has been successful in bringing climate-change mitigation and adaptation concerns into urban planning. The project has also influenced local policy and the revision of the Master Plan, which wass due for preliminary approval in 2018.
The Zorrotzaurre project is an urban renewal project to promote the sustainable restoration of a currently derelict site in the Zorrotzaurre peninsula, northwest of the city centre. The plan is to create a new quarter that is well-connected to the rest of the city, with affordable housing, environmentally-friendly business areas, social and cultural facilities, and spacious green areas for recreation. The Master Plan was designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, and includes the conversion of the current Zorrotzaurre peninsula into an island by opening up the Deusto Canal.
The municipality of Lasarte - Oria has suffered numerous and catastrophic floods due to the flooding of the Oria River. In order to avoid future risks the river was channeled in 1995 but this necessary action had a negative environmental impact on the destruction of river habitat and degradation of spaces next to the river by various industrial settlements. The challenge was to naturalize the channeling wall without it losing its protective function while recovering the vegetation riverside and a green river park was created;
The fertile plain of Saria Oeste, located in the inner estuary of the Oria, is a space included in the Natura 2000 Network and declared a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Ría del Oria (Code ES2120010), for several of the habitats of interest it encompasses: Atlantic salt meadows (Code 1330) and alluvial forests of alder and ash trees (Code 91E0*).
The town centre of Lezo is crossed by various watercourses which collect the waters of Mount Jaizkibel and whose associated ecosystems have been reduced due to the effect of anthropisation and urban development pressure. The town council has been working for several years on the regeneration and enhancement of these watercourses, as is the case of Olatzar, the course of which runs alongside the town's urban garden park.
