Description of solution
The nature reserve Bernrieder Filz with a size of almost 43 ha is owned by the Bund Naturschutz and thus represents about 2/3 of the entire raised bog "Bernrieder Filz". It was one of the first land purchases of the Bund Naturschutz, which it made in 1935. Although it was already drained at the edges around 1900, it still belongs to the well preserved raised bogs in Bavaria. Only about 5% of all raised bogs in Germany are still in a natural state. Nevertheless, action is needed to stop the destruction of the peripheral areas. Since the early 1980s, ditches have been closed by hand and areas already overgrown by pine and spruce trees have been cleared. From 2008 to 2010, with the help of state subsidies, a complete restoration could be carried out, and the neighbor also made his areas available. Around 100 dams were built using a light, all-terrain excavator, so that the now approx. 70 ha large bog area can naturally continue to develop. The dwarf birch occurrence there, probably the second largest in Central Europe, is thus also secured for the future.
